Black Ops Care Packages: What are the Odds?
Does it seem like every Care Package you thrown down in Black Ops ends up giving you a UAV, Ammo or one of the lower killstreak rewards? Not only is there a good reason for that (so the game isn’t full of Mini Guns, Choppers and Dogs ), but Treyarch were nice enough to leave the exact percentages of getting each of the killstreaks in a Care Package within the code on the disc.
Here is a explanation of how these percentages are calculated:
percentage of drop explanation:
add all of the numbers up: 15 + 2 + 3 + etc. = 80 for example
now if you want to know the percentage of the minigun_mp drop, you’d do (minigun_mp number / total) or 2/80 = 2.5% chance of dropping
right now this is at a perfect 100, so the percentages are easy to understand

Not only that, but using Hardline Pro’s “Gamble” changes the odds in favor of middle ground streaks a bit more, making it extra useful as a Perk. Also, it will never just give you the same thing again when you change it.

I use hardline pro with the sam turret don’t know if it was made to work this way but I’m able to change it’s content giving me pretty much a care package at 3 kills and opening the 3rd slot for something else.

Hardline Pro is a great way to take statistical advantage of care packages. First, set your killstreak rewards to SAM Turret, Care Package, and Sentry Gun. When you have all three and call them in, there’s a high chance of getting at least one good reward using the Hardline Pro bonus, which allows you to reroll on your package rewards.
Let’s do some basic math to put it into perspective:
Take into account chances of getting one of the following: Rolling Thunder, Napalm, Blackbird, Chopper Gunner, Dogs, or Gunship.
The sum of these are 17% or 0.17. You get four opportunities to receive one, three with rerolls and one from the original care package drop. So the chances of NOT getting one of these is 0.83 per care package.
So the chances of getting at least one of these amazing killstreaks is 1-(0.83)^4 which is 52.55%. However, the chances of getting two or more are MUCH smaller.

The hardline pro perk let’s you change any crate. You can call in a Sam turrent or a sentury gun and change it. A Sam turrent takes less kills to get than a care package. Something to consider when using hardline pro. Pick Sam turrent over care package or both. I use the sentury gun, Sam turrent, and sentury gun. Also hardline pro works on enemy carepackages

Wow, it’s almost easier to get EMP’s (from MW2) then it is to get dogs/gunship. Thats pretty crazy…

ive noticed that a lot of the time i get better rewards with the care package if my kill streak is higher, but if i die and use it when my streak is at 0, its usually ammo or something. did treyarch say anything about this? or is it just me?

It is because they patched it they only allow the changing of actual care packages now because people myself included were using the 3 package hardline pro switcharoo and getting several dogs n gunships in one round.
